How to Find the Right Engagement Photographer

How to find an engagement photographer

Engagement Photographer vs. Wedding Photographer

Most couples hire their engagement photographer as their wedding photographer too. The two types of photography typically go hand in hand and most photographers bundle these sessions together giving you a better price to do both. It’s encouraged to treat the search as one. When you’ve found someone you think you may want to hire, check out their wedding portfolio as well. Most of the time if you love their work as an engagement photographer, you’ll love their work as a wedding photographer. The engagement session with your wedding photographer is also a great time to bond with them and preview how they work before the stressful wedding day. With that said, not every situation calls for the same photographer for both. These are examples of when you may hire two different photographers:

  • Destination wedding. Couples typically hire an engagement photographer local to where they live but their wedding may be in another state, possibly in another country. So it doesn’t make economic sense to fly your engagement photographer to the wedding site. You’ll have to find someone local to the wedding area to avoid paying unnecessary travel fees.
  • Engagement photography only. Weddings are stressful, there are a lot of personalities in one space, and so much room for error so your engagement photographer may not shoot weddings for those reasons. You may love your engagement photographer but that’s all they offer- a bummer but it’s ok! Just make sure you don’t push your engagement photographer to do your wedding, if they don’t like doing it then listen to their limits.
  • Not in love with your engagement photos or the photographer. This article’s goal is to try and help avoid this from happening but you may take all the steps in finding someone you think you love but they may end up being a dud. It could be the photographers style of direction, the way they communicate may not be as open as you’d like, or you just didn’t like the engagement photos when you got them back. Don’t try and make it work! It’s important to stick to your gut and find someone that really gets you!
