What to Wear and What Not to Wear

Once you’ve narrowed in on the vision and a location for the shoot- now it’s all about the clothing. Attire for a photoshoot can be scary even to the most stylish person. You may love something but it can be something that doesn’t photograph well. Or you choose clothing that you’re uncomfortable to pose in and it makes you come off stiff in photos. Or you simply don’t coordinate well with your partner. It’s a lot of pressure but don’t panic.

Follow these tips on what to wear and what not to wear for engagement photos and you’re sure to nail your attire.

  • Do wear something you love and feel good in. Don’t try to make something work that you don’t fully love because no matter how gorgeous your photos turn out, you won’t be happy if it doesn’t feel like you.
  • Do coordinate with your partner and make sure your attire is complimenting each other. Don’t go with exact colors or matching attire. You want to look like a couple not twins.
  • Do accessorize with items you love like a favorite hat or denim jacket. Don’t over do it with too many accessories. Edit your looks.
  • Do wear a print if you want a unique pop to your photos. A cool plaid suit jacket or a fun floral dress are great ways to bring life to your pictures. Don’t do brands or logos. They distract from you two and it feels like a commercial for those companies.
  • Do consider the location and time of year for your clothing. Don’t wear a contradicting item of clothing to your scenery. For example, a brightly colored summer dress in a fall setting is a no-no.
  • Do play with color in your attire. Like stated above, don’t forget to be mindful of your partners clothing, your location, and time of year when selecting your color palette. You want everything to flow together, not fight each other.
  • Do wear something classic like black and/or white for your engagement photos if you’re not a print or color person. Don’t both wear black and/or white together. You’ll blend in photos where you’re holding each other and look like a two-headed couple. Nobody wants that.
  • Do talk to your photographer about outfit changes and if you have time/if they allow it in your engagement shoot. If you want an outfit change and your photographer is open to it, don’t come to the shoot with more than one outfit change. Show up in the first look and change into the second mid-way. More than that takes away valuable shoot time.
